Kijiji Night

The Seattle Art Museum and One Vibe Africa have presented Kijiji Night at the Seattle Art Museum annually since 2015.  Kijiji means “village” in Swahili. The Third Annual Kijiji Night will be hosted on Thursday, February 22, 2017 from 6:00-9:00 pm.  The evening will bring the spirit of an African village to SAM through live traditional musical performances, storytelling, poetry, and displays of excerpts from One Vibe Photo Book, We Will Lead Africa, and Unbounded by Boniface Mwangi.

Kijiji Night involves a whole village of Pacific Northwest celebrated storytellers, poets, authors, musicians, rappers, and orators.  Kijiji Night engages the audience while helping them learn valuable lessons from an African village perspective.

Kijiji Night features One Vibe Africa’s videos, photo-shoot, and merchandise.

The first Kijiji Night was on September 3, 2015, and since then it has grown to include performances by artists such as BlackStax, Yirim Seck, Sharon Williams, Nichelle Alderson, Adilia Scott, Infinite & Yesod, Leija Farr, Nana Kibibi Mone, Kouyaté Arts, Yaddi Bojia, Simon Okelo, and Thione Diop.

We hope to strengthen Kijiji Night as an annual event as well as a platform for transforming communities through storytelling, poetry, music, and art.  We also hope that it will continue to be a special event for Africans and African Americans in Seattle who have primarily supported it as a part of Black History Month.
