Sports are viewed by many as critical events in the world for its entertaining value for the fans, business for the community, and source of income and livelihood for the participating athletes. Kenya is popular for its renowned marathon and long distance runners. Many people actually don’t even know that Kenyan soccer players are in the English Premier League. Slums like Manyatta where One Vibe Africa operates from in Kisumu is also one of the primary sources of talent. Soccer players like Victor Wanyama who plays for Tottenham Hotspur in the English Premier League and captains the Kenya national team grew up on the East side of Nairobi that’s also considered ghetto. Many youths like him defy prevailing challenges such as drugs and violence, unemployment and economic hardship, which reduces talented sports people to the level of desperation.
Many youth in our Education Music and Art Program also come from the underserved areas of Kisumu such as Manyatta, Kondele, Nyalenda, Obunga. Their desire and zeal to conquer and overcome their challenges has unfortunately not been matched with opportunities and facilities to nurture their skills and talents. We have the facilities at Young Generation Centre and a support network. Our goal is to organize a consistent series of sports tournaments and clinics where we invite players like Victor Wanyama to share their stories and encourage upcoming talent. We are confident that these small community sports events offer an opportunity for maximum development of talent and exposure. We currently run a soccer tournament in Manyatta and we hope to strengthen it.
